That Was The Year presented a beautiful collage of sound, imagery and storytelling of unconventional relationships and troubled times.
That Was The Year was devised from ‘In 1969’, a short story by Beth Yahp. The story unfolded around a woman giving birth in a ditch, amidst the chaos of the racial riots of 1969 in Kuala Lumpur. Combining fact and fiction, it told of the woman’s life as a prostitute, her relationship with her lover and her experiences in the new village.
That Was The Year was a performance-collage constructed using Beth Yahp’s short story. “In 1969” as its main text. The text, pregnant with allegorical references, offers a rich source of images and meanings from which we developed a performance using narration, movement, and song.
