Since 1984, Five Arts Centre has worked with thousands of artists and cultural practitioners from diverse backgrounds. These include performers, directors, choreographers, designers, writers, artists, composers, producers, production managers, stage managers, researchers, facilitators, technicians, operators, interns, supporters, volunteers, and more.
The collective’s work would not be possible and sustainable without the contribution, dedication, imagination, and talent of these fellow travellers. Here are some close collaborators over recent years.
Hoe Hui Ting is a producer and production/stage manager with over a decade of experience in Malaysia’s theatre scene. A graduate of New Era College (2011), she began her professional journey with Five Arts Centre, where she worked from 2013 to 2019 and returned in 2024 as company manager. Along the way, she has worked with a range of companies including The Instant Cafe Theatre Company, Wild R!ce (Singapore), Pentas Project, klpac, DPAC and O Puppet Theatre. Balancing her work in the arts with raising two children, Hui Ting values care, clarity, and creating spaces where artists feel supported, safe, and able to do their best work.
Meshalini Muniandy graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in BFA Acting and Directing in 2023. Mesha had previously interned with Five Arts Centre in 2022, taking on different roles as an assistant stage manager, production assistant, and archivist. In 2023, she worked with Five Arts Centre as an Apprentice, as part of MyCreative Ventures' Arts Managers Apprenticeship Performing Arts Programme. She is currently the production coordinator at Five Arts Centre.
Dian Fitri Tan is a co-founder of Kino-i Pictures. She has produced and managed a wide variety of projects, from documentaries, television shows, feature films, workshops, and training programmes. Alongside these responsibilities, Dian is also involved in community workshops and research projects. Her current research focus is on the role of women journalists in the early days of Malayan-Malaysian media.
Fahmi Reza is a self-taught graphic designer and political activist based in Kuala Lumpur. As a multidisciplinary artist, he has produced thousands of political graphics since 2002 and challenged Malaysia’s official history through his documentary films and lecture performances on forgotten historical struggles.
Fasyali Fadzly is a director and playwright whose works have been staged in Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, and the Czech Republic. His theatre reviews and articles are published in Critics Republic, ArtsEquator, Dewan Budaya and Jurnal Svara. His first collection of plays, Teater Juta-Juta: Koleksi Skrip Teater Fasyali Fadzly, was published in 2020. Fasyali is a researcher with MY Art Memory Project, and teaches at the Theatre Faculty at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA – Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan).
Imri Nasution first ventured into the arts in 1994, when he joined Five Arts Centre’s Teater Muda programme as a teenager. He subsequently enrolled in Akademi Filem Malaysia and entered the field of film and television. Since then, Imri has worked on many popular shows, including Disney’s Wizards Of Warna Walk, Viu’s Kopitiam Double Shot, Astro’s Oh My English! & many more. He has also performed in theatre and performance projects such as Baling (membaling), In 1969, Something I Wrote, Baling and Version 2020. He is a co-founder of Kino-i Pictures.
Leow Puay Tin is one of Malaysia’s most acclaimed theatre artists, known for her innovative approaches to writing, devising, and curating “tikam-tikam” performance texts. Her major plays – Three Children, Family, and (A Modern Woman Called) Ang Tau Mui – have been performed widely across South East Asia, Australia, Germany, Japan, and the USA. Puay Tin is also Associate Professor at the Department of Film and Performing Arts, Sunway University.
Ng Yuh Ning is a graduate from the Department of Drama and Visuals, New Era
University Collage. In secondary school, she joined the 24 Festive Drums team and fell in love with
the experience of being on stage, which led her to explore theatre upon graduation. Ning is a
drummer with
FrhythmS Percussion, and also works as a backstage crew in theatre
productions. She worked with Five Arts Centre as production assistant from 2023 to 2024.
Rupa Subramaniam is a creative professional based in Kuala Lumpur. Since 2014, she has been developing communal art projects that get disseminated through digital platforms. Her take on Hindu Goddesses protesting female body policing by using bodypaint in 2017 reached more than 2 million views worldwide. Her artistic activism is now a feminist web-documentary series called ANTIDOTE: skinandsoul.art. Currently focussing on cyber-crime, Rupa aims to continue having a brave conversation around body and safety. She is the founder of Art Battle MY, leads the Banana Leaf Art Collective, and teaches art with GoodKids Malaysia.
Wong Tay Sy has been actively involved in the fields of contemporary art, theatre, and film production since 1999. Working with different arts collectives, organisations, and production houses, she has extensive experience as an award-winning production designer, curator, producer, and facilitator. In her work and projects, Tay Sy believes in the process of collective creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration, and she is particularly interested in the intersections between the arts and our social environments. She is a visual arts graduate from Central St. Martins, London.
Shawna Lynn Scully (2023 intern) was born in Selangor and raised in Melaka. At the age of 15, she was introduced to theatre and developed a passion for singing and acting. Shawna is currently a student at Universiti Malaya, majoring in Drama.
Bernadette Anne Carpio (2024 intern) is an upstart multidisciplinary artist for film and theatre. She acts, directs, writes, sings, and dances. She graduated from the Diploma in Performing Arts program at Sunway University, and is currently pursuing a BA in Theatre and Drama at the University of South Wales UK. She also graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a BA in Literature. She worked as a theatre performer under directors such as Kelvin Wong and Haru Murasaki.
Aramy Rasyid (2024 intern) holds a Diploma in Dance from ASWARA. He is currently doing his Bachelor of Dance with Honors (Choreography) from the same alma mater. As a dancer, he has performed in productions such as Dancebox, Short+Sweet Malaysia, Festival Tari Malaysia, JAMU, PST Suasana and Borneo, and Muzikal Kami. His achievements as a dancer include receiving the International Champion award for Akar Kita Zapin Nusantara 2022, first place at Festa 2022 and third place Festival Tari Malaysia 2022.
Azif Fazriq / Doro (2024 intern) is a 2025 University of Richmond, USA graduate with a BA in Performance Studies. While still unsure what he wants to do artistically, he enjoys writing, directing and performing when in university, as well as working in costumes, hair and makeup.
Ong Xian Jinn / Ren (2024 intern) is an aspiring filmmaker and a current student at TAR UMT, pursuing a diploma in broadcast communication. During his internship at Five Arts Centre, he worked as an editor and documenter, contributing to projects such as Re-Public and handling lighting for Mortal Man performances. He recently released his first solo short film, I'm Still Here, which he directed and starred in—an idea sparked by a singing performance by Five Arts Centre member Faiq. Passionate about storytelling through film, Ren continues to explore the intersection of visual and emotional narratives. He also likes green.
Nur Alyaa Afifah (2024 intern) holds a Diploma in Dance Performance from the Faculty of Performing Arts at the College of Creative Arts, UiTM (one of the few early batches to graduate from). Alyaa is trained in dance, theatre, theatrical design and related professions. A newcomer dance artist, exploring and trying all kinds of genres of dances out there. Driven by her commitment to advocating for women’s rights, Alyaa aims to use dance as a medium to raise awareness.
