Rhythm In Bronze is a concertised gamelan ensemble which has explored and developed new music for the Malay gamelan set.
Traditional gamelan styles adapted for the Malaysian gamelan set are also part of the repertory. Led by Sunetra Fernando and Jillian Ooi, Rhythm In Bronze has engaged with composers who have written new works specially for the ensemble. Its players are musicians and educators within the Kuala Lumpur are arts community and are an integral part of Rhythm In Bronze’s development.
Rhythm In Bronze is based at Five Arts Centre, a non-governmental arts collective significant for its development of original Malaysian creative works. Rhythm In Bronze performs on The Actors Studio gamelan, and its production are collaboration with The Actors Studio. Special features of Rhythm In Bronze’s works are its intercultural approach, the development of a new audience for the gamelan and the effective of gamelan on the concert stage.
The multi-cultural approach of Rhythm In Bronze reflects the multi-ethnicities of its musicians. The contrasts with the traditional context of gamelan performance which remains within the domain of a Malay cultural activity.
