Rama and Sita

Rama & Sita – Generasi Baru will be presented as a contemporary teenage theatre presentation where the participants will interpret the timeless epic to create a version that will display values, ideas, images, movements, and sounds from their world.

In the classic tale of Ramayana, Rama & Sita feature prominently as two young people on the threshold of adulthood. Touching episodes reveal their various relationships with parents, siblings, friends, and enemies. Their ‘growing up’ begins as they come to a crossroads where they have to make choices for themselves, struggling between idealism and worldliness.

In this performance of Ramayana, young people will look at the tensions, trials, and triumphs of the characters Rama & Sita in the light of their own lives today. They may relate to some of this history, they may question some of it or they may discard some of it. With this play, we hope to see young people relook their past and discover for themselves its relevance.

‘Ramayana’ – young people may be in awe of the title but are ignorant of the myth. For many adult Malaysians the tale of Rama augers as somethings sacred, something ancient, something from the past, to be revered but too far back to return to. –

We chose the Ramayana because it tells the wonderful story of love and envy, of kidnap and rescue, of monsters and magic, of good and evil. It is a timeless tale of our needs, our wants, our fantasies and our realities.
