In 2018, Kyoto-based choreographer and director Zan Yamashita came to Kuala Lumpur to follow performer and writer Fahmi Fadzil’s election campaign to become Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai.
With little expectation of success for his friend, Zan witnesses a historic moment in Malaysia – experiencing the euphoria of regime change and observing the performativity, promise, and compromises of politics.
GE14 traces Zan and Fahmi’s experiences during the 2018 general elections, presented through documentation and re-enactment of political speeches. It provides several overlapping portraits – of a decade-long friendship; of a watershed moment of democratic change in Malaysia; and of a friend’s transition from performance maker to politician.
