Engaging Dramaturgy for Contemporary Performance: Developing Frameworks for Practice

Facilitated by theatre educator, researcher and dramaturg Charlene Rajendran, this workshop focuses on the value of dramaturgy and the role of dramaturgs in the practice of contemporary performance making.  It develops dialogue around a dramaturgical framework for navigating the complexities of artistic practice, and suggests ways in which participants can negotiate their views and values in relation to specific projects and performances they are involved in.

It offers participants opportunity to discuss their concerns for performance making in relation to dramaturgical thinking and doing, and explores how context, culture, choice and conviction are critically entangled in the process of developing art.  It also raises questions about how to respond through performance making to ongoing precarity in everyday life, and the complexities of new dramaturgy that resist rigidity and fixed templates.  Instead, the call to experiment and reflect, explore and review, is generated to highlight the potentiality of situated and subjective dynamics of care and collaboration.
