As we grapple with our own life issues, what are we doing about the people in our family who are getting old in our midst, whose lives are coming to an end even as we are striving to make our marks on the world?
This eternal human dilemma is explored in a rehearsed reading of Leow Puay Tin’s The Carer's Monologue & Chorus. This new play presents a collective of contemporary people learning to respond to an 86-year-old woman, a connoisseur of the Chinese opera, as they witness her grappling with the breaking down of her body in a world that is vastly different from the one she knew.
One of Malaysia's most acclaimed and performed playwrights, Leow Puay Tin is writing several new plays between 2019 and 2021. During this period, rehearsed and online readings of these works-in-progress and performance texts will be held. This is part of a strategy by the playwright to spend time on dramaturgy with younger actors and directors; to cultivate a less hierarchical and more collaborative approach to performance making; and to find a more sustainable alternative in developing new performance texts.
