For the last week, Lee Su-Feh has been leading a small group of artists in a movement workshop based on her research in Qigong and the energetic body. This workshop asks:
"Can we and the objects around us share a given space together based on a system that is not intellectually imposed but comes out of the intelligence of a whole and polysensorial body?"
This project interrogates our assumptions about the inanimate and the living, and through that, the human body and its relationship to its environment.
About LEE SU-FEH
Originally from Malaysia, and proud alumni of Janet Pillai’s Teater Kanak-kanak and Marion D’Cruz and Dancers, Lee Su-Feh is a dancer, choreographer and occasional trouble-maker currently based in Vancouver, Canada.
Lee Su-Feh is Artistic Director of battery opera, whose award-winning work interrogates the contemporary body as a site of intersecting and displaced histories and practices. Described as “sexy, propulsive, and deeply metaphorical”, battery opera's work ranges from "messy, marvelous works that jumble text, dance and music, riffing on subjects like cock fighting and sea wrecks” to "minimalist, soothing and beautiful" meditations.
Her most recent creations are her solo, 'The Whole Beast' and her collaboration with Montreal choreographer Benoît Lachambre, 'Body-Scan', which earlier last year was presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2008, Su-Feh returned to Kuala Lumpur briefly and presented the non-lecture, '20 years in dance and I still don't know what the $#@&?*! I am doing...' at The Annexe Gallery.
