CAKAP DAPUR: R & D Stories

Adapted from a workshop by Professor Mohd Anis Md Nor
by Leow Puay Tin

Adapted from a workshop by Professor Mohd Anis Md Nor, the text modules for this script have been derived from a 3-day workshop on research and documentation specifically for arts practitioners, which Leow organised with Professor Mohd Anis Md Nor, a subject expert in the field of performance studies, as the facilitator. The workshop took place in December 2013, in Petaling Jaya, with six practitioners. Her request to Prof Anis was basically to show us how to do research and to expose us to theories and ideas which would be beneficial for us to know; that is, to help us become more critical in our process and of our works.

A 3-month rehearsal process will be a laboratory for an experimental way of working which will involve the performer/director giving a series of “progress report performances” to a panel of proxy-directors who will provide necessary feedback. Readings were performed to audiences at Sinkeh, Penang in Nov'14 and at Five Arts Centre, TTDI KL in Dec'14.

Directed and Performed by Chee Sek Thim, the staging at DPAC in Feb2015, takes the audience through a series of text modules touching history, culture and identity using a classroom lecture as its format. We hope the script will be meaningful and engaging to a general audience who come to see the performance – they have been cast in the role of arts practitioners attending a R and D workshop.
